German Lower House Approves Bailout for Greece

Germany’s Bundestag has approved a second bailout plan for debt-ridden Greece with a large majority.

The German lower house voted through the second rescue plan for Greece with 496 lawmakers in favor and 90 against.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel asked the Bundestag to approve the bailout, saying that the risks of abandoning Greece would be incalculable. But she also admitted that there were “no guarantees” the second bail-out would work.

Despite some unease within the coalition government, the rescue package for Greece had been expected to pass the Bundestag smoothly with the wide backing of opposition parties, the Social Democrats and the Greens.
