Bloody Crackdown on Antigov’t Protesters Continues in Syria

A Syrian activist group says 135 died at the hands of the government's bloody crackdown on Monday, local time, amid the Syrian government's announcement of a new constitution born through a referendum.

The Local Coordination Committee of Syria said at least 135 protesters were killed by government soldiers, including 64 in the rebel-held area of Homs. However, the organization failed to clarify whether all the deaths occurred Monday or over the past several days.

Meanwhile, Syria’s state-run TV reported more than 89 percent of voters backed the new constitution in the referendum, which had a voter turnout of 57-point-four percent.

World leaders have condemned the referendum as a "sham," and German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said the referendum is "nothing more than a farce."
