UK and Argentina's Conflict over Falklands Spreads to Trade

Conflict between the U.K. and Argentina over the Falkland Islands is drifting into a trade dispute and aggravating into an international issue.

The Argentine government called on 20 companies earlier this week to halt imports of British products.

In response, the U.K. called for arbitration by the European Union, while Argentina asked for help by the 12 members of the Union of South American Nations in dealing with the ongoing conflict over control of the Falklands.

Meanwhile, Argentine President Cristina Fernandez officially asked South American countries’ heads of state to attend the 30th anniversary in April of the start of the war over the Falklands.
