G8 FMs Meeting to Issue Chairman's Statement on N. Korea

The U.S. State Department says it expects a meeting of foreign ministers of G8 nations to yield a chairman's statement denouncing North Korea for its planned rocket launch.

State Department Spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters Wednesday that the U.S. expects the meeting to generate the statement.

Nuland’s remarks came as U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said during the G8 session in Washington that she believes all the G8 economies “share a strong interest in stability on the Korean Peninsula," adding the G8 countries will be discussing how best to achieve that stability.

Clinton said the North is preparing to launch a long-range ballistic missile over the East China Sea just weeks after agreeing with the U.S. to a moratorium on missile testing. Clinton stressed that the North’s planned launch “violates multiple UN Security Council resolutions.”
