US, Western Countries Ease Sanctions on Myanmar

The U.S. and other Western countries plan to ease sanctions on Myanmar, which successfully held by-elections earlier this month.

The U.S. Treasury Department said Tuesday that the U.S. will ease financial sanctions on Myanmar to allow U.S. civilian organizations to conduct aid activities there.

The U.S. is also planning to ease sanctions related to financial transactions, investments and exports with the Southeast Asian nation. It will station an ambassador in Myanmar for the first time in 20 years.

Norway’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday that it also lifted economic sanctions against Myanmar, but it is still banning the trade of weapons.

The Australian government also announced a plan to ease sanctions on Myanmar, saying that Yangon’s series of political reform measures are positive developments.
