East Sea Petition Draws Fire Ahead of IHO Meeting

An online petition is currently taking place for the selection of the term “East Sea” to replace “Sea of Japan” ahead of the International Hydrographic Organization’s meeting on April 23.

The U.S. White House’s website crashed due to overwhelming traffic from South Korean and Japanese petition participants.

While a Korean online petition to urge the IHO to select the term “East Sea” as the name of the body of water that separates the Korean Peninsula and Japan is ongoing, Japanese internet users are pushing for the opposite.

The IHO holds general meetings every five years and this week the group of 73 member countries will decide on the sea’s official name.

The South Korean government aims to prevent the name from being left as it is, while member countries have voiced wishes for South Korea and Japan to solve the issue amicably.
