IHO Assembly to Decide East Sea Label This Wk

The general assembly of the International Hydrographic Organization will open Monday for a five-day run.

The meeting will decide whether to use "East Sea" as a dual name for the body of water between the Korean Peninsula and Japan in the revised edition of the IHO's publication, the "Limits of Oceans and Seas." The volume records the designations and boundaries of oceans and seas worldwide.

Currently, the body of water east of Korea is solely labeled as the "Sea of Japan."

In a working group meeting held before the general assembly, South and North Korea have requested the dual name.

Many countries including Australia say that as the area qualifies as a labeling conflict zone, both sides' calls should be accepted and both names be indicated.

Japan insists on the exclusive use of Sea of Japan, and the U.S. and the UK support Japan based on the one place for one name principle.

The working group meeting failed to reach a conclusion and submitted a report to the general assembly simply stating the opinions of both sides.
