Traditional Korean Pavilion Likely to be Built in New York

A traditional Korean octagonal pavilion will likely be erected in New York.

The Korean-American Association of Greater New York announced on Thursday that it is seeking to build the traditional structure in Southpoint Park across from UN headquarters on the southern tip of Roosevelt Island.

The association said it wants to build the pavilion to promote Korea’s traditional architecture to tourists from all around the world who visit New York.

The association said it had explained the plan on building the structure before the Roosevet Island’s steering committee during a meeting last month. At the meeting, some New York council members and members of the steering committee pledged to provide active support for the plan, including providing necessary plots of land.

The structure of the pavilion will be produced in South Korea and later assembled in the U.S. Costs to build the traditional architecture are estimated to stand between 150-thousand and 200-thousand dollars. Such costs will be covered by funds raised by Korean companies and local governments as well as Korean-American organizations.
