Most Japanese People Have No Hope for New Political Party

A survey finds that more than 80 percent of Japanese people have no expectations for a new party established by a large group of politicians who recently quit the ruling Democratic Party of Japan.

In a three-day phone survey conducted by Japan’s Yomiuri Shimbun from July 13th, 82 percent of respondents said they don’t have high hopes for the new party, which is headed by Ichiro Ozawa, a former chief of the ruling party.

Regarding a desirable political structure, 48 percent of respondents said they want to see a new government through a political realignment, while 21 percent supported a “grand coalition” between the ruling Democratic Party of Japan and the opposition Liberal Democratic Party.
