US Patent Office Invalidates Apple Patent Used Against Samsung

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has invalidated all 20 claims of Apple’s so-called "rubber-banding" patent, including 19 claims Apple used against Samsung Electronics in patent trials this summer.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office’s latest ruling overturns a decision made by a U.S. jury in August that ruled Samsung violated six of Apple’s patents, including the rubber-banding patent. Rubber-banding refers to the way a smartphone display bounces back once a user has scrolled to the bottom of a document or photograph.

The U.S. patent office said the bounce-back feature is not a technology that belongs solely to Apple.

The latest ruling is expected to bring about significant impact on Samsung and Apple’s patent battles that are taking place worldwide.
