Malaysia's Governing Coalition Extends Rule with Win in National Elections

Malaysia’s entrenched governing coalition has won its 13th straight general election, extending its rule that began in 1957.

Malaysia’s election watchdog announced Monday morning that Prime Minister Najib Razak’s National Front coalition won 133 seats in the 222-member parliament while the opposition, a three-party alliance, secured 89 seats.

As a result, the ruling coalition will remain in power until 2017.

Following the electoral commission’s announcement, the Malaysian prime minister stressed in a news conference that the people’s choice must be respected. However, it will likely take more time before allegations of election fraud are settled, as the opposition has been crying foul.
