US, 40 Allies to Stage Anti-mine Drills in Persian Gulf

The U.S. and 40 allies will partner for a massive naval drill in the Persian Gulf starting next week.

The two-week, U.S.-led exercise will include operations to escort commercial ships, sweep mines, handle maritime oil leaks and guard coastal terminals.

With underwater detonation devices mobilized, 35 ships and 18 unmanned submarines will take part in the drill.

Although the 41 countries don’t say that the drill is specifically designed to counter Iranian threats, the exercise is regarded as an effort to keep Iran’s growing naval presence in check.
