The New York State Assembly has unanimously approved a bill outlawing the trade of shark fins, following the same decision by New York's Senate.

Local media report that the bill will ban the sale, purchase and possession of shark fins as soon as Governor Andrew Cuomo signs it.

If the bill takes effect, New York will be the seventh state in the U.S. to take shark fin soup off the menu at restaurants.
