US Congress: Japanese PM's Remark on Imperial Past Could Hurt US Interest

The U.S. Congressional Research Service says that diplomatic conflicts in Northeast Asia will not be good for the U.S.’ national interest.

The service said in a recently published report on U.S.-Japan relations that Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s controversial remarks on the island nation's history of invasions during World War Two can cause diplomatic conflicts in the Northeast Asian region.

The report said that the regional diplomatic conflicts could hurt the U.S.’ national interest.

Previously, the U.S. government unofficially conveyed its concerns about the Japanese prime minister’s remarks through a diplomatic channel.
