Lee Sang-wha Wins Silver in Women's 500m Speed Skating
South Korea’s Lee Sang-hwa won a silver medal in the women’s 500-meter speed skating event at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics on Sunday.   In the final held at the Gangneung Ice Arena, Lee crossed the finish line with a time of 37-point-33 seconds to finish behind Japan’s Nao Kodaira. Kodaira claimed the gold with a time of 36-point-94 seconds, an Olympic record.  Karolina Erbanova of the Czech Republic took the bronze medal.  Lee has now picked up medals in three consecutive Winter Olympics having won gold at the 2010 Vancouver Games and at the Sochi Games in 2014.    Lee’s compatriots Kim Hyun-young and Kim Min-sun placed 12th and 16th respectively in the same event.

S. Korea’s Female Curling Team Edges Toward Semi-Finals
The South Korean women’s curling team claimed their fourth win of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics on Sunday to edge toward a place in the semi-finals.  The four-member team, led by skip Kim Eun-jung, defeated China 12-5 at the Gangneung Curling Centre. The Korean team started the match strongly as they scored three points in the first and third ends. They then added four points in the fifth end to take a 10-2 lead. China struggled to catch up and eventually conceded defeat after the eighth end.  Following the win, the South Korean team lie in joint-second place among the ten participating nations having posted four victories and one loss. The top four teams will progress to the semi-finals of the competition.  In the day’s other matches, Sweden defeated Great Britain 8-6 and Canada beat Switzerland 10-8.

Oystein Braaten Claims Gold in Ski Slopestyle
Norway’s Oystein Braaten won the men’s freestyle ski slopestyle event at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics on Sunday.   Braaten’s near-faultless opening run earned him a score of 95-point-00 which was not surpassed by any of his competitors during the event’s three rounds at Phoenix Park.    American Nick Goepper took the silver medal with a best score of 93-point-60, while Canadian Alex Beaulieu-Marchand narrowly claimed the bronze just ahead of Great Britain’s James Woods.    It was a high-quality final, with five of the 12 finalists achieving a best score of above 90 points. Braaten’s win represents the first time that the 22 year-old has picked up an Olympic medal. The Norwegian finished tenth in the men’s freestyle ski slopestyle event at the Sochi Winter Olympics in 2014.

Austria’s Marcel Hirscher Wins Giant Slalom
Austria’s Marcel Hirscher won the giant slalom skiing event on Sunday to claim his second gold medal of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.  Hirscher posted a time of two minutes 18-point-04 seconds for his two runs at Yongpyong Alpine Centre to top the rankings.  The 28 year-old finished one-point-27 seconds ahead of Norway's Henrik Kristoffersen, while Frenchman Alexis Pinturault finished in third to take the bronze medal. South Korea's Kim Dong-woo finished 39th out of the 75 skiers to finish the event.  It represents Hirscher’s second gold medal of the Games following on from his win in the combined skiing event.  With the victory, Hirscher is now the reigning Olympic, World Cup and world champion in the giant slalom.  The Austrian will aim to claim his third title of the Games in the slalom event on Thursday.

S. Korea Wins Gold, Bronze in Short Track Speed Skating
South Korea's short track speed skater Choi Min-jeong won a gold medal in the women's 15-hundred-meter event at the PyeongChang Olympics on Saturday. Li Jinyu of China earned silver and Kim Boutin of Canada took bronze. Kim A-lang finished fourth while Shim Suk-hee was eliminated during the preliminary round.   On the men's side, Seo Yi-ra grabbed a bronze medal in the one-thousand-meter race while Lim Hyo-jun, who won gold in the 15-hundred meters, finished fourth. The gold medal went to Samuel Girard of Canada and the bronze to John-Henry Krueger of the U.S.   South Korea ranks ninth in the overall medal tally with three gold and two bronze medals.

Iron Man Yun Sung-bin Snatches Asia's First Skeleton Gold
Anchor: South Korea's Yun Sung-bin has claimed the host country's second gold medal of the Pyeongchang Games, becoming the new men's skeleton champion. This is the first time that any athlete outside of Europe or North America has won an Olympic medal in the sliding event. Kim Bum-soo has more.  Report:  [Sound bite: Men's skeleton final (Feb. 16)] In the final fourth heat at the Olympic Sliding Center in Pyeongchang, Yun Sung-bin clocked in at 50-point-02 seconds for a cumulative three minutes and 20-point-55 seconds.  Wearing an Iron Man-style helmet and red race suit, the 23-year old rocketed past the finish line at over 125 kilometers per hour, winning by a whopping one-point-63 seconds over silver medalist Nikita Tregubov, an Olympic Athlete from Russia. As the 23-year old Yun dominated in all four races, the bronze went to Britain’s Dom Parsons and five-time world champion Martins Dukurs of Latvia placed fourth. After the race, Yun walked to the home crowd and greeted them with a deep bow on his hands and knees. Yun later told reporters that he appreciated his fans. Yun Sung-bin Wins S. Korea's 1st Olympic Gold Medal in Skeleton
South Korean slider Yun Sung-bin won the country’s first Olympic gold medal in the skeleton event at the PyeongChang Winter Games.  Yun also became to first Asian athlete to win the gold, clocking a time of 50-point-02 seconds in the fourth heat for a cumulative time of three minutes and 20-point-55 seconds at the Olympic Sliding Center in Pyeongchang, ranking number one among 30 athletes.  Yun’s time was one-point-63 seconds faster than Russian athlete Nikita Tregubov, who took the silver medal.  The bronze went to Britain’s Dom Parsons.  Fellow South Korean Kim Ji-soo ranked sixth in the race while long-dominant Latvian Martins Dukurs placed fourth.  Yun’s medal was the second gold for Team Korea.

N. Korea's Taekwondo Demonstration Team Returns Home
North Korea's taekwondo demonstration team returned home Thursday after performances in South Korea celebrating the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. The Unification Ministry said that the 28-member team returned to North Korea by using the inter-Korean transit office on the Gyeongui Line on the western border. Three coaches and administrative officials traveled back to the North via Beijing by air as they did when they arrived in South Korea.  The North Korean performers arrived in the South last Wednesday and demonstrated their skills in four joint taekwondo performances with their South Korean counterparts, including the one before the Olympics' opening ceremony in PyeongChang.

Skeleton Racer Yun Sung-bin Closer to First Olympic Gold
South Korea's skeleton racer Yun Sung-bin is on pace for the country's first Olympic gold medal in the men's skeleton event. In his first run at the Olympic Sliding Center in PyeongChang on Thursday morning, Yun set a track record of 50-point-28 seconds.  He broke that record in his second run, clocking in at 50-point-zero-seven seconds for a combined time of one minute and 40-point-35 seconds. Yun will have two more runs on Friday morning. The final rankings will be decided after all four runs.
