Gyeongju Historic Areas

Year of UNESCO Registration: 2000

Gyeongju was the capital of the Silla Kingdom that existed for nearly 1,000 years from 57 B.C. to 935 A.D., producing a total of 56 monarchs. It is far more than just a city, as it is also considered the cultural home and origin of the Korean people. It is very rare in human history for a city to serve as a capital for a millennium. Not surprisingly, the region is filled with relics and heritages. UNESCO named it “Gyeongju Historic Areas” to add it to the list of world heritage sites that deserve preservation. A number of Buddhist relics and legacies from the daily lives of the people of Silla, including sculptures, pagodas, temples, palace sites, royal tombs and mountain fortresses, are found in the areas. Gyeongju Historic Areas are truly living, outdoor museums and a huge treasure trove.
