Some remember Korea for its resilience during the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis.
Others recall its passionate journey toward democracy.
And for some, it’s the warmth of a Korean stranger they met by chance. For some, it's the thrill they felt at a K-POP concert, and for others,
the helping hands of a Korean rescue team
in the midst of disaster is what stays in their heart. In celebration of the Korea’s 80th anniversary of liberation,
we’ve gathered stories from people around the world who remember Korea in their own way.
These memories will come together to help write a new story of Korea’s past, present and future.

  • ILAYDA ASIMGIL, German
I came across a photo of my grandfather, who was a Korean War veteran at the War Memorial of Korea in Yongsan. The Koreans who were visiting the museum expressed their appreciation and gratitude for my grandfather’s service. It was an incredibly touching moment, one I’ll cherish for the rest of my life.
  • RUY VALDÉS, Mexico
As a journalist working in Korea, the orderliness and strong civic awareness at protest sites left a deep impression on me. The demonstrations often felt like peaceful festivals, with participants cleaning up after themselves and everything running smoothly. Korea’s protest culture is truly exemplary.
  • TO KOICHIRO, Japan
On my honeymoon to Korea in 1990, I saw someone leave unused minutes on a public phone for the next person. That small act of thoughtfulness spoke volumes about the Korean spirit of helping and saving. That very mindset, I thought, helped the country overcome the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis.
  • ALMETOVA ALISA, Russia
I still remember the attitude of the vendors when I visited a traditional market in Korea. Most of them were elderly, and they always greeted us with warm smiles and kindness. Whenever we bought something, they would often give us a little extra for free. I wasn’t used to such gestures, but it felt incredibly heartwarming.
  • LI MENG ZHEN, China
EXO’s 12th anniversary fan meeting is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of Korea. I’ll never forget the sight of fans waving silver light sticks in unison, singing along together.
  • LUIS VALDERAS, Chile
During the great Chilean earthquake, the Korean relief team and KBS reporters who were dispatched brought immense comfort and strength. Thanks to Korea’s support, the local people were able to regain hope and courage.
