Episode #73: A Newbie's Guide to What to Eat in Korea
Today, I wanted to help travelers to Korea with suggestions about they should eat and where they could go to eat it. Korea has many areas in Korea that specialize in specific foods. Some of these foods might be a bit strange or weird for people newly acquainted to Korean food. Today, I wanted to suggest dishes that those new to Korean food and explain a bit more about it.

The first dish that you should try when you come to Korea is bulgogi. This is an ubitquitous dish you can find at nearly all Korean barbecue places. It is thinly sliced beef that is marinated in fruit juices, sesame oil, soy sauce, garlic and green onions. I would suggest this dish because it is not too spicy and the flavor is savory. Bulgogi tastes best when it is cooked over charcoal. You should eat the meat wrapped in a leaf and topped with ssamjang. Ssamjang is a soybean paste sauce that is not too spicy and adds a bit of saltiness to the meat and leaf.

The second dish I think you most try is Dakhanmari or Whole Chicken in a pot. It's like poule le pot or chicken soup. This dish is great because the broth is delicious and so is the chicken. Plus afterwards, you can add noodles and kimchi to the dish to completely transform it into a spicy noodle soup. Some people would suggest that visitors should try samgyetang or chicken and ginseng soup, but I think the flavor of the ginseng might be too strong for those new to Korea. I think if you like Dakhanmari then you can go for Samgyetang next.

The third dish that I would suggest for newbies to Korea is doenjang bibimbap. I would suggest this over the regular bibibimbap because the sauce is not as thick or as spicy like gochujang. Plus, the rice mixed with this sauce and vegetables is a very comforting and approachable dish.

Another great dish for newbies is Soondubu. This is a soft tofu stew with clams and shrimp and egg. The dish will come to the table bubbling hot. I think that the silky texture of the tofu tastes great because it is so creamy.

Of course, you can't go wrong with fried chicken. Everyone loves Korean fried chicken because it is so crispy.

Another dish I would recommend is galbitang or beef rib soup. This hearty dish has beef ribs that are boiled in broth with daikon radish and topped with green onion. This dish is very unique and considered a celebratory dish for beef is a very special ingredient.

Anyway, there are lots of Korean foods you can try. These are just some suggestions for people that are just new to Korea and its vast culinary wilderness. I think if you start with a few of these dishes, you'll soon learn how delicious and amazing Korean food is.
