“Blacky’s Mother (Ggamgeuni Umma),” produced by the Seoul Broadcasting Station, won the best TV drama award at the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union Prizes on November 3rd in Tehran, Iran.
First aired in 2006, “Blacky’s Mother” is about children of mixed race born of international marriages and how their families overcome family conflicts and fight social prejudice.
The drama has already earned wide recognition for its moving portrayal of mixed race children and won various domestic awards, such as the 11th YWCA Good Program Award and the 2006 Green Media Award. Korea is experiencing a rapid rise in the number of international marriages and migrant workers from abroad. “Blacky’s Mother” was timely in that it raised issues with racism and diverse forms of family.
Previous ABU awards won by SBS include the best TV entertainment program award in 2000 for “The Daughter of a Butcher,” the best radio documentary in 2004 for “The Rebellion of Typhoon Maemi,” and the best TV entertainment for “Our Child is Changed” in 2006.
