North Korea Human Rights Activist Lauren Walker

2010-07-09

Most people familiar with North Korea are aware of the reclusive nation’s grave humanitarian crisis. In the 1990s, it’s estimated that more than two million people died as a result of starvation. On this program, we’ve interviewed guests who have described the expansive network of gulags that imprison hundreds of thousands of North Koreans, for so-called crimes as simple as possessing South Korean pop music and dramas.

My guest on this week's show, Lauren Walker, has been in Korea for only 13 months. But during her short time, she has become very involved with several nongovernmental organizations that are working to raise awareness about the humanitarian disaster taking place just a few kilometers north of us. Through her media advocacy, community organizing and performance art, Ms. Walker hopes to mobilize a critical mass of Koreans and non-Koreans alike around the important issue.
