Each S. Korean to Shoulder 760,000 Won Next Year for Nat'l Debt Interest Payment

Amid the growing concern over the snowballing national debt, the cost next year for paying the interest from the national debt to be shouldered by each person in South Korea is estimated to be around 760-thousand won.

Rep. Park Myung-jae of the ruling Saenuri Party disclosed the figure Thursday based on government data submitted for the parliamentary audit.

The data showed that the government will pay 38-point-five trillion won next year in interest payments for the debts owed by the central government, regional governments and public agencies.

South Korea’s population is estimated to reach 50-point-six million next year, meaning one person will shoulder 760-thousand won in interest cost from the national debt.

Interest from government bonds took up a majority of the interest cost at 22-point-eight trillion won, followed by the interest from public organizations’ debt at nine-point-eight trillion won. The interest from the currency stabilization bonds issued by the Bank of Korea will amount to four-point-nine trillion won.
