North Korea has reportedly conducted test-firings of two newly upgraded air defense missile systems to evaluate their combat capabilities.

According to the North's state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) on Sunday, the Missile Administration carried out the tests on Saturday, with leader Kim Jong-un personally overseeing the launch.

The KCNA stated that the tests demonstrated the missiles' "superior combat capability" in responding swiftly to aerial threats such as attack drones and cruise missiles.

The agency added that the systems' operational and response mechanisms are based on "unique and special technology."

Kim was accompanied by senior party and military officials, including Air Force Commander Marshal Kim Kwang-hyok.

The report comes as South Korean President Lee Jae Myung prepares to visit the United States for summit talks with U.S. President Donald Trump.
