Japanese Netizen Attacks VANK Web Site

Japanese netizens have attacked the Web site of a nongovernmental Korean cyber network.

Chairman Park Gi-tae of the Voluntary Agency Network of Korea or VANK, an online diplomatic mission, says the server shut down after Japanese netizens attacked the Web site Monday night.

He said as a protective measure, only domestic Internet users are able to access the site at the moment.

Park said when Japanese figure skater Mao Asada beat out Korea's Kim Yu-na to win the Grand Prix Final Saturday, some Korean netizens attacked a Japanese Web site, and Japanese netizens attacked VANK's site in retaliation.

He said the Japanese are distorting the facts, acting as if VANK was responsible for the cyber attack.

VANK is an organization whose main goal is to correct wrong information about Korea in foreign countries, such as territorial issues regarding the Dokdo islets dispute and other historical issues.
