The U.S. Army has started giving scholarships to Reserve Officers’ Training Corps members who choose to learn one of ten special languages, such as Korean, Arabic or Mandarin Chinese.

USA Today said that the scholarships are offered to encourage ROTC members to learn the languages of nations considered to be hotspots.

U.S. military operations have faced difficulties of late in these areas, as only a small number of military members can speak the local languages.

Since fall of this year, 89 ROTC members have received monthly scholarships of as much as 250 U.S. dollars in return for learning one of the languages.
