S. Korea, US Work to Eliminate NK WMD Program

South Korea and the U.S. are jointly devising measures to have North Korea give up on its weapons of mass destruction.

The measures include the possible use of military power.

A U.S. report says that the U.S. Pacific Command and the South Korean military set up a working group devoted to developing capabilities to remove North Korea’s WMDs.

The report was published in May by the Center for the Study of the Weapons of Mass Destruction at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C.

According to the report, the removal entails the systematic disablement and destruction of the weapons after identifying WMD programs of nations or regimes.

Analysts say that the South and the U.S. launched the joint working group due to the prevailing belief that the North will not scrap its WMD and nuclear programs voluntarily, despite diplomatic efforts like the creation of the six-party nuclear talks.
