AP: Clinton to Select Campbell for Top State Dept. Post

The Associated Press (AP) says U.S. Secretary of State-designate Hillary Rodham Clinton has selected Kurt Campbell to be assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs.

Campbell formerly served as deputy assistant secretary of defense for Asia and the Pacific under the administration of former President Bill Clinton. He was Hillary Clinton’s key advisor on foreign affairs during the race for the Democratic presidential nomination, and he has also worked for Obama’s transition team.

As a result, Clinton, Deputy Secretary of State-designate Jim Steinberg and Campbell are expected to lead the drafting of U.S. policies regarding the Korean Peninsula.

Meanwhile, the AP added that top nuclear negotiator Christopher Hill was asked to retain his position but turned down the offer and is expected to leave office.
