NYT Urges China to Help Prevent NK Rocket Launch

The New York Times has urged China to do more in dissuading North Korea from its planned rocket launch.

The daily said in a Wednesday editorial that Pyongyang’s launch plan was creating new tensions in Northeast Asia.

The editorial said Pyongyang may be trying to insert North Korean issues on the Obama administration’s agenda or cause friction among members of the six-party nuclear talks.

Meanwhile, the International Crisis Group warned that an overblown response to North Korea’s rocket launch may put an end to the multi-nation nuclear talks and heighten the risk of war.

The Washington-based think tank added that the launch would increase Japan’s security risks only slightly as the North already tested a medium-range Nodong missile that could be tipped with a nuclear warhead and can reach Japanese territory.
