'UNSC Could Meet within 24hrs of NK Rocket Launch'

The U.N. Security Council may convene as early as this weekend if North Korea proceeds with a planned rocket launch.

Japan’s Ambassador to the U.N., Yukio Takasu, told reporters Friday that he will request an emergency session of the Security Council if North Korea launches a long-range rocket, suggesting that such a session could open this weekend.

According to the Associated Press, the United States and France have expressed support for Japan’s proposal while China and Russia have opposed the imposition of further sanctions on North Korea.

Senior diplomatic sources in Washington say active efforts are under way to have the Security Council address the North’s launch. The sources said the Security Council would likely meet within 24 hours after a launch.
