A Japanese daily has reported that the United States and Japan have agreed to seek a new U.N. Security Council resolution if it carries out its planned rocket launch.
Yomiuri Shimbun said the new resolution will reconfirm strict adherence to the Security Council resolution 1718, passed in October 2006 after North Korea claimed to have tested a nuclear weapon.
The report said that the two countries are also considering financial sanctions against ten North Korean companies and organizations.
U.N. Security Council Resolution 1718 included a freeze of overseas assets of North Korean companies related to nuclear and missile activities but does not list specific names.
But Washington and Tokyo are also contemplating the issuance of a statement by the Security Council chariman or a press statement to condemn the North's rocket launch instead since China and Russia are negative about adopting such a resolution.
