Britain, France Condemn NK Rocket Launch

Britain and France are denouncing the launch of a rocket by North Korea on Sunday.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said during an interview with a French broadcaster on Sunday that his country condemns North Korea’s launch and that the international community must unite to sanction a government that does not abide by international regulations.

British Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, David Miliband, said the North’s recent rocket launch violates U.N. resolutions. He urged Pyongyang to abandon all missile-related activities and to actively take part in the six-way nuclear talks.

Meanwhile, the Associated Press said Britain and France, which are permanent members of the U.N. Security Council, are unlikely to seek the adoption of another resolution against North Korea as China and Russia, who are both veto-wielding members of the Security Council, have opposed further sanctions on Pyongyang.

In the Czech Republic, the leaders of the 27 member states of the European Union (EU) met with U.S. President Barack Obama and urged for sanctions through the U.N. Security Council against North Korea. EU states said the North had not only violated U.N. resolutions but also undermined peace and stability in the Northeast Asian region.
