The U.N. Security Council has adjourned its first meeting to discuss a rocket launched by North Korea Sunday.

The council convened for three hours, but failed to reach an agreement on how to respond to the North’s launch.

Mexico's U.N. Ambassador Claude Heller, who holds the council's rotating presidency this month, told reporters after the meeting that the members of the Security Council agreed to continue consultations on the appropriate reaction by the council in accordance with its responsibilities given the urgency of the matter. The council is set to meet again on Monday.

Meanwhile, a senior official of South Korea’s mission to the U.N. said Seoul had not expected an agreement to be reached during the council’s first meeting. He added that South Korea will closely watch developments in the council’s future meetings.

Chinese Ambassador to the U.N. Zhang Yesui said the council should be both prudent and fair in considering its reaction to North Korea’s launch.
