China Urges Calm, Restraint Over Rocket Launch

China is urging for a cool-headed response to North Korea’s rocket launch, saying Pyongyang was confirmed to have launched a satellite and not a missile.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry said Monday that nations concerned about the North’s recent launch should exercise calm and restraint and join efforts to establish peace and stability in the region.

Foreign affairs experts say that though China cannot oppose discussions on the North’s rocket launch at the U.N. Security Council, both China and Russia are likely to oppose further sanctions on the North.

Experts cite China’s obligation to continue with the six-way nuclear talks as the host of the negotiations as the reason behind its low-key response. Experts also noted that Beijing is conducting various events this year to mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties with Pyongyang.
