China Urges Emergency 6-Party Talks

China once again urged Tuesday the countries involved in the North Korean denuclearization talks to reconsider its proposal to hold an emergency meeting.

Spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry Hong Lei told reporters that the emergency meeting among the members of the six-party talks was to provide a starting point for defusing mounting tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Hong pointed out that such a gathering would provide the members with an opportunity to have contact with each other.

Hong also said that the most urgent and important issue of the current situation on the Korean Peninsula is to return to a path of negotiations, adding that Beijing hopes to handle the agendas within the framework of the six-party talks.
