Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan has urged the members of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to sternly deal with North Korean provocations.
Kim made the call on Thursday during a summit of the organization in Astana, Kazakhstan, as he explained the current security situation on the Korean Peninsula, including the North’s artillery attack on South Korea’s Yeonpyeong Island last week.
Kim said the North’s artillery attack violated the U.N. Charter and the Korean War Armistice. He stressed, in particular, that the North’s indiscriminate attack on civilians cannot be tolerated. Kim then asked the member states of the OSCE to assume a stern and clear stance on illegal attacks by the North.
In response, the chief delegates of Britain, Australia and Japan denounced the North’s artillery attack and vowed full support for Seoul in addressing the matter.
Greece expressed concerns about the security conditions on the Korean Peninsula following the North’s attack and condemned the shelling as an illegal act that violated international laws.
