U.S. President Barack Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao discussed the situation on the Korean Peninsula during a telephone conversation on Monday.
China Central Television said Tuesday that Hu called Obama on Monday and said that China is greatly concerned about the current tension on the peninsula and deeply regrets the loss of lives and property that resulted from North Korea’s artillery attack on South Korea’s Yeonpyeong Island last month.
The Chinese foreign minister said Hu called for a calm and rational response from all sides to prevent the deterioration of the fragile security situation on the Korean Peninsula.
Hu also stressed the importance of the six-way nuclear talks and the need to resume the negotiations.
In response, Obama reportedly asked for China’s cooperation to clearly convey to the North that its provocations will not be tolerated.
According to the White House, Obama also stressed that the North must suspend all provocative behavior and fulfill international commitments, including the ones Pyongyang made under the September 19th, 2005 Joint Statement.
