Libya to Try 2 S.Koreans on Violation of Religious Law

Libya has reportedly informed Seoul that it will try two South Koreans who were released from Libya in October after being arrested this summer for violating Libyan religious law.

A Foreign Ministry official said Wednesday that Libyan authorities had initially informed Seoul that a trial for the two Koreans, identified by their surnames Koo and Jeon, was set to open on Tuesday. But later, in a separate notification, Libya said it was delaying the trial date to December 21st.

Libyan authorities said that Koo and Jeon were released under orders from Libyan leader Muammar al-Qaddafi but that a trial will be held for the Koreans nonetheless in accordance with administrative procedures.

The Seoul official said, however, that Libyan authorities have yet to disclose the details of the upcoming trial.

Koo, who is a pastor, is charged with violating Libyan religious laws carrying out his duties as a missionary. Jeon, who is a farmer, allegedly assisted Koo with his missionary duties. Koo was arrested in June and Jeon in July.
