South Korean construction companies are keenly monitoring developments in Libya as speculations and predictions of an imminent collapse of the Gadhafi regime are circulating. The Korean firms had evacuated during the escalating turmoil in the North African nation, leaving their construction sites unfinished.
Daewoo Construction and Engineering was one of the companies that evacuated, leaving seven construction sites unfinished in Tripoli, among other sites. Although it expressed hopes that the construction will resume, the company stated that what is more important is that Libya stabilizes rather than focus on who seizes control over the nation.
Hyundai Engineering and Construction predicted that resuming construction would not meet obstacles even if the rebels take power, as it had been mostly building infrastructure on which government institutes had placed orders.
The International Construction Information Service, which is currently operating an emergency response team related to the crisis in Libya, plans to discuss resuming the Korean companies’ construction operations and compensating any losses once negotiations begins.
