US Proposes Remains Excavation Talks to NK

Voice of America says a U.S. envoy has proposed talks with North Korea to resume the excavation of the bodies of U.S. soldiers from the Korean War.

VOA based its report on a letter that was sent by Senator Kelly Ayotte to U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta. The broadcaster said the letter detailed the proposal of such talks by U.S. Special Representative for North Korea Policy Stephen Bosworth.

North Korea’s Foreign Ministry said On August 19th that the United States proposed talks on excavating the remains of missing U.S. service members in a recent letter, and that the North was positively considering the proposal.

Bosworth recently held high-level talks with North Korean First Vice Foreign Minister Kim Kye-kwan in New York late last month. The two officials discussed the North Korean nuclear problem and the normalization of relations between the U.S. and North Korea in the meeting.
