IAEA Adopts Resolution Urging NK to Halt Nuclear Development

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has unanimously adopted a resolution submitted by South Korea, Japan and the U.S. that urges North Korea to halt efforts to develop nuclear weapons.

Last year, a similar resolution was submitted at the IAEA general conference, but its adoption was not unaminous due to abstention by some Arabic nations.

South Korea’s Ambassador to Austria Cho Hyun, who represented the South at the conference, stressed Thursday that the international community must continue to denounce the North for its nuclear development program even if efforts are being made to resume the stalled six-way nuclear talks.

Cho said if the international community does not issue such criticism repeatedly and in a strong manner, silence could encourage the North to continue to disregard the international community’s request to rejoin denuclearization efforts.
