Japanese Foreign Minister Mulls Visit to S.Korea

A Foreign Ministry official said final coordination is being made for Japan’s Foreign Minister Koichiro Genba’s visit to South Korea.

The official said Genba plans to visit South Korea around early October to discuss a schedule for Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda’s trip to Korea.

The official added that during Genba’s visit, the two countries are expected to address the issue of sex slaves, or comfort women. However, the ministry official said no official response has arrived from Japan on the South Korean government’s proposal for bilateral discussion of the sex slave issue.

Foreign Minister Kim Sung-hwan had asked Noda and Genba to visit Korea at the earliest date possible.

Also, Genba requested a visit by President Lee Myung-bak to Japan at the South Korea-Japan foreign ministers’ meeting held in New York last Saturday.
