Greek Gov't Paralyzed by General Strike

Written: 2011-10-20 13:18:51Updated: 2011-10-20 17:55:57

A massive general strike is further crippling Greece, a nation on the verge of declaring sovereign debt default.

Protestors throw rocks and petrol bombs at riot police who respond with tear gas.

Some 100-thousand people took to the street in a 48-hour general strike as Greek parliament is expected to pass austerity measures including tax hikes and pay cuts.

The Greek government has been paralyzed, as public officials are taking a lead in the strike. Ten government agencies have been occupied by protestors.

The final parliamentary vote on reforms and the government’s belt-tightening plan, which were demanded by international creditors, will be held on Thursday in Greece.

If the austerity plan fails to get the final nod from parliament, Greece cannot receive additional bailout money from the EU next month.
