10 mln. N. Koreans Receive Under 50% of Needed Calories

A new UN report says that more than ten million North Koreans are given food rations of less than half their daily recommended nutritional intake.

UN envoy on North Korean human rights Marzuki Darusman said in a report submitted to the UN General Assembly that of the 16-million North Koreans who depend on rations, 68 percent get less than half their daily caloric needs.

The envoy said that concern over food shortages in North Korea has increased due to the approach of winter.
