The number of Chinese fishing vessels and the volume of fish Chinese fishermen can catch in South Korea’s exclusive economic zone will be reduced next year.

The Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry said it held a bilateral meeting on fishing last Thursday with China, where they agreed to limit the number of ships to one-thousand-six-hundred-50 and set the amount of fish caught to 62-thousand-five-hundred tons in South Korea’s Exclusive Economic Zone next year.

This is a drop by 50 ships and two-thousand-five-hundred tons from this year. In particular, the number of trawlers will be decreased by 28 and gillnetters will be cut by 22. Trawlers and gillnetters catch more fish than other ship types.

The two nations have also agreed to ban fishing vessels from operating in the zone for three years if they are convicted of one of three serious illegal activities such as fishing without a permit, resisting arrest or trespassing in territorial waters.
