Oxfam: Climate Change Will Hit Those in Need Hardest

An international aid organization is warning that the recent soaring crop prices bode ill for consequences that would result from climate change.

U.K.-based Oxfam International said in a report that an aggravating climate change will lead to a rise in crop prices. It added that the poor will suffer from the jump in crop prices and the deaths of livestock if climate changes to an extreme.

Oxfam noted that international wheat prices surged up to 80 percent in the three months after Russia was hit by unusually hot weather in 2010.

The organization said the poorest people who spend up to 75 percent of their income purchasing food were hit hardest by the increased wheat prices. It expressed concern that the ultra poor will suffer greater pain when climate change becomes more serious.
