US Seeks Repatriation of S. Korean Soldiers' Remains from N. Korea

The U.S. military says it aims to hold talks with North Korea on repatriating the remains of South Korean soldiers who died during the Korean War while serving as Korean Augmentation Troops to the U.S. Army (KATUSA).

U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Prisoners of War and Missing Personnel Affairs Robert Newberry unveiled the plan Monday saying the U.S. has reached agreements with the North on excavating the remains of U.S. soldiers from the Korean War.

Newberry’s remarks to reporters came during a luncheon that was held in Washington Monday after South Korea and the U.S. signed a memorandum of understanding on cooperating in unearthing the remains of soldiers that died during the war.

Newberry said that excavation work for remains of U.S. soldiers in the North will be carried out from April to October next year.
