Lost Amazon Forest Equal to 50,000 Soccer Fields

Brazil has lost an area of forest equal to the size of 50-thousand soccer fields in a month’s time due to illegal logging.

Citing data from Brazil’s Environment Ministry, Brazil’s official Agencia Brasil news agency on Tuesday reported that the Latin American country lost 386 square kilometers of forest in the Amazon in October.

That’s an increase of 52 percent from 254 square kilometers of forest lost in September, but similar to the amount of lost forest recorded in October of last year.

The area of destroyed forest in the Amazon reached 27-thousand-400 square kilometers in 2004, but it sharply decreased to 65-hundred square kilometers last year.
