US House Panel Approves Resolution on Wartime Abductees

A U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee has adopted a resolution urging North Korea to return South Korean prisoners of war and U.S. nationals detained in the North since the Korean War.

The U.S. House Committee on Foreign Affairs’ Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific unanimously approved the bill during a full session in Washington Wednesday.

The resolution focuses on the issue of South Koreans abducted by the North during the Korean War in view of the fact that the U.S. did not actively address the issue when negotiating an armistice.

The resolution highlights that more than 100-thousand South Korean citizens were abducted during the Korean War and stresses the need to recognize such actions as war crimes.

The resolution also urges the North to provide information on whether those abductees are dead or alive and immediately allow family reunions or the repatriation of remains.
