Korea’s Energy Policy Receives Positive Review From IEA

The International Energy Agency (IEA) says South Korea has effectively set up a system on responding to energy emergencies.

The South Korean mission to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development said Wednesday that the Paris-based IEA issued its assessment after examining South Korea’s energy emergency countermeasures since November of last year.

The agency concluded that South Korea has in place stern energy security policies, including having an oil reserve system and measures on securing oil.

The last time the IEA conducted such inspections was in 2006.

In particular, the agency said South Korea’s level of oil reserves far exceeds the IEA’s standard of 90 days of consumption and as a result, Korea could release barrels from its strategic oil reserve when another country is suffering from energy troubles.
