U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has met with Myanmar’s leaders in the country’s new administrative capital of Naypyitaw.
On the second day of her trip Thursday, Clinton met Myanmar’s President Thein Sein and held talks with Foreign Minister Wunna Maung Lwin.
In her talks with the foreign minister, Clinton urged Myanmar to seek further reforms including releasing all political prisoners and resolving conflicts with ethnic minority groups.
The top U.S. diplomat reportedly expressed Washington’s intent to provide economic assistance in return for Myanmar’s further reform efforts.
Clinton also urged Myanmar to halt what U.S. officials say are illicit contacts with North Korea.
An official explained to Clinton Myanmar’s reform efforts that have been taken since the launch of the civilian government. The official asked her to convince western nations to lift sanctions against the Southeast Asian country.
Clinton’s trip has made her the first U.S. secretary of state to visit Myanmar in more than 50 years.
