The chairwoman of the U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee is calling for tougher sanctions against North Korea following reports that the communist state is developing intercontinental ballistic missiles.
Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen said Wednesday that new reports of the North developing long-range ballistic missiles that can be mounted on vehicles signify that the threat posed by the North is “becoming even more severe.”
Calling the North a “legendary proliferator," Ros-Lehtinen said it is certain North Korea will share its technological advances with countries such as Iran and Syria. She then underlined that the U.S. needs strong sanctions to prevent “rogue” countries “from gaining access to destructive technology and making good on their threats against the U.S. and its allies.”
The congresswoman called for the swift legislation of a nonproliferation bill to sanction countries that engage in the trade of illegal products, including weapons of mass destruction, with North Korea, Iran and Syria.
